Downtime

Story: Downtime – independent spin-off by Reeltime Pictures

Synopsis: Sarah and the Brigadier get caught up in the strange case of a New Age university...

Sarah Moments:

• She goes to meet the Vice-Chancellor of New World University, one Victoria Waterfield
• She quizzes Victoria about a strange event in London 25 years ago
• Victoria tries to trick Sarah into telling her where the Brigadier is, but Sarah’s having none of it
• Sarah calls the Brigadier to warn him, and accidentally leads Victoria to him
• Sarah gets in touch with UNIT and goes with them to New World to sort things out
• The Brigadier secretly tells Sarah how to defeat the Intelligence
• Sarah tackles a guy and shoots at a yeti, and throws a gun at it when that doesn’t work…
• Sarah pushes a yeti into the generator and saves the day!

Capture, Rescue and Mortal Peril:

• While there’s quite a lot of peril going on generally, none of it is specifically Sarah-related

Quotes:

• ‘I think the sum agreed was 12k, assuming all the profiles are complete?’ ‘Uh… not quite.’ ‘Oh, Miss Smith – when we were advised of your reputation, both Miss Waterfield and I were impressed. We thought, what’s a few red tape barriers to a journalist of this calibre?’ ‘But you didn’t tell me some of this data was government classified.’ - Christopher Rice and a suspicious Sarah
• ‘I found records implying that twenty-five years ago, central London was evacuated in an industrial accident. They say it lasted three months. There are no extant reports; no-one even remembers. Well, how can that happen?’ - Sarah
• ‘Oh, come on – New World’s more than just a New Age Sunday School – you’ve got fingers in more pies than Robert Maxwell!’ - Sarah
• ‘Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m just a journalist!’ - Sarah, denying her involvement with UNIT
• ‘What is New World University? You don’t have lectures – you don’t even have tutors!’ ‘All the tuition is conducted by the mainframe. A personalised syllabus for every student.’ ‘Since when did computers get personal?’ - Sarah, who has obviously forgotten about poor K9, and Victoria
• ‘Victoria Waterfield? That’s you on the list, isn’t it, at the London event? Oh, you must have been really young…’ ‘Considering I was born over 140 years ago…’ ‘Haha, peanuts, I used to know someone who… oh, never mind. Oh, sorry, I mean, um, no, you don’t look a day over…’ ‘I don’t feel a day over!’ - Sarah and Victoria
• ‘No, I said Codes NN and QQ… QQ, it’s urgent!’ ‘I see, thank you!’ ‘Oh, I’d get more sense from a tea lady! Sorry?’ ‘May I ask if you’ve encountered anything resembling a yeti?’ ‘Have I encountered… any what?’ ‘A yeti.’ ‘What have yeti got to do with it?’ - Sarah gets irate on the radio to UNIT

• ‘This place is like a beacon… it’s Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, isn’t it? Sarah Jane Smith – hello! Your father said it might be a family affair! So, show me where to find him!’ - Sarah, arriving at New World and taking charge
• ‘Sarah, take this, it’s from my father.’ ‘I’m a rotten shot – you hang on to it.’ - Kate and Sarah, on the Brigadier's gun. Of course, we know Sarah isn't a rotten shot because of Pyramids of Mars, but probably she just doesn't want to use it...
• ‘Miss Smith! I knew there was someone here I could rely on!’ - The Brigadier to Sarah
• ‘It was just like old times, eh? And I still don’t know what’s going on!’ - Sarah to the Brigadier
• ‘So, he said it was Victoria’s dress, and I said, well as long as Albert didn’t wear it…’ ‘And you think it could have been her?’ ‘Well, I don’t know – there’s no trace of her, she just vanished.’ ‘Certain people we know make a habit of that!’ ‘Do you know, companions used to be something only dowager aunts had…’ ‘No, Sarah – it applies to families as well!’ - Sarah and the Brigadier. Aww.

Wardrobe Appreciation

Sarah only wears one outfit in this story, a beige suit with a spotted scarf. Not to mention wicked big hair...

She wears white shoes, and, briefly, purple gloves:

The Panel Said...

Style Watch:

paranoidangel: Sarah goes 80s! Although it doesn't look any better on her. 2/10
Sarah_JaneSmith: Im not liking the brown dress thing, its not exactly flattering, i dont like the hair either. 3/10
Llin: I think the accessories spoil it a bit, but on the whole I approve. 6/10

Sarah Watch:

Sarah_JaneSmith: She's alright in this i guess, the same Sarah Jane we all know, but older. 5/10
Llin: She does more or less save the day, and she's quite chilled out about it too. 7/10

Story Watch:

paranoidangel: I managed to get through I think about 20 minutes before I lost the will to live. 1/10
Sarah_JaneSmith: I find it hard to muster up any kind of excitement about this, it's not very good really, it's nice to see the brig and victoia again but i think the story is crap. 5/10
Llin: It wasn't gripping but I found it quite watchable even in the bits Sarah wasn't in... 7/10
