Genesis of the Daleks ![]() Story: Genesis of the Daleks – Season 12, Story 78 Year: 1975 Written by: Terry Nation Directed by: David Maloney Synopsis: The Time Lords send the Doctor, Sarah and Harry to Skaro to avert the creation of the Daleks. Sarah Moments: • She fights the Kaled soldiers, but gets knocked out and left outside alone ![]() • She seemed completely unconcerned about waking up covered in corpses • She sees Davros test the prototype Dalek! ![]() • She has a slight crisis of confidence while climbing up scaffolding and being shot at, but she gets over it with a little help from Sevrin • She steals the Doctor’s stuff back for him, including the Time Ring Capture, Rescue and Mortal Peril: • She’s stalked and surrounded by Mutos and rendered unconscious somehow. Will they eat her?! Well... no. One of them, Sevrin, fights to protect her, but then they both get captured by Thals anyway • The Thals force Sarah to work on their rocket, exposing her to distronic toxaemia, which, allegedly, is fatal after a few hours exposure • She organises the escape plan, and leads the captive workers in climbing up the rocket scaffolding ![]() • She falls off the scaffolding! A tad anticlimactically, she lands safely on a sticky-out bit ![]() • They almost makes it to the top, but the Thals catch up with them, and a particularly sadistic soldier dangles her over a chasm • She begins to succumb to distronic toxaemia, but amazingly, as soon as the Doctor and Harry come and rescue her, it goes away all by itself • She and Harry rescue the Doctor from the Mutos • She nearly gets snapped at by a big clam... • They are all captured by Davros, and he tortures Sarah and Harry to coerce the Doctor into giving him information ![]() • Sarah and Harry overpower the guard and rescue the Doctor • She pulls the horrible mutant creatures off the Doctor Quotes: • ‘She’s beautiful – no deformities, no imperfections.’ ‘She is a Norm. All Norms are our enemies. Kill her now for what she’s done to our kind.’ ‘But why? Why must we always destroy beauty? Why kill another creature because it is not in our image?’ - Sevrin protects Sarah from the nasty Muto • ‘Why, it’s almost a Norm! Come on, get up, up! Ahh, kill it off, it’s too slow!’ - One of the Thals, on Sarah. Charming... • ‘You’re not scared, are you?’ ‘Of course not!’ ‘I am.’ - Harry and Sarah, in the creepy cave • ‘I’ll never eat oysters again!’ - Sarah, after narrowly escaping the giant clam things • ‘Listen, I’ve been down tunnels before, and I’ve just had a rather nasty thought...’ ‘Really?’ ‘Yes... suppose something’s waiting for us in there?’ ‘That is nasty... better not tell Harry, he’s gone first!’ - Sarah and the Doctor, as they enter a creepy tunnel Wardrobe Appreciation Sarah's first outfit for this story is the yellow mac get-up she wore for The Sontaran Experiment, the ideal outfit for sneaking unnoticed around Skaro's barren landscape... ![]() Sensibly, she soon takes the mac off, and we get to have a proper look at the culottes-and-jumper combo underneath ![]() Let's look a bit closer - the pattern on her jumper really is jolly nice. And with culottes that wide, I'm suprised that she didn't just float gently to the ground when she fell... ![]() And the boots... ah... Sarah always has such fantastic shoes, and these are no exception ![]() Later on, Sarah gets changed again, for no good reason that I can see. The Doctor finds an outfit that happens to fit her in a random cupboard full of explosives, and she happily puts it on... Still, it looks fab, so whatever. ![]() ![]() The Panel Said... Style Watch: paranoidangel: I do like those boots. And the jumper and coulottes combination. And the clothes she randomly changes into for no reason. But how could they not see her in the yellow mac? 9/10 Cadi: I LOVE the culottes and jumper. And those boots are completely awesome. Not so keen on the second outfit, but it's way better than the yellow mac *shudder* hhertzof: The camoflage outfit has to be one of my favourites. I loved the jumper (sweater). Her boots, as usual, make me wince. How could she run in those? (I'm not taking points off for them, though) 10/10 Llin: I WANT the culottes, and the boots. And the yellow mac rocks my socks. 8/10 Sarah_JaneSmith: I love the Yellow mac, and i'm a huge fan of the Jumper and Shorts The boots are great but i dunno how she managed to climb in them, the camoflauge is great too. 10/10 Sarah Watch: paranoidangel: She does mastermind an escape plan and is actually quite useful. 8/10 hhertzof: Very resourceful Sarah, organising the resistance and arguing morality with the Doctor. 10/10 Llin: She does lots of cool stuff in this one. But I can't give her full marks because of the clam thing. I mean, come on. It doesn't even move. 9/10 Sarah_JaneSmith: I love her climbing up the scaffolding and then falling off, i'm a bit dissapointed at her though because actually [and not many people realise this] she did actually get a lot of people killed during her escape plot, so i have to give her 7/10 Story Watch: paranoidangel: I really like this one. There's so much going on that it's interesting all the way through. 9/10 hhertzof: One of my favourites. 10/10 Llin: Loads going on, some really classic moments, Harry and the Doctor are wicked! 8/10 Sarah_JaneSmith: There's good reason that this is one of the best doctor who stories ever, it's ace! 10/10 Bonus Pictures ![]() Daleks! ![]() The Doctor and Davros battle it out ![]() Sarah hides ![]() OMG! ![]() ![]() Harry wished the Doctor had bothered to read the UNIT memo about Appropriate Touching Between Colleagues... ![]() The Doctor contemplates genocide |
