Do you have a painting in your attic?’ ‘That’s not what I keep in my attic…’ – The taxi driver and Sarah • ‘You know, it’s people like you who must make that poor journalist’s life a misery! I imagine she’s always looking over her shoulder, constantly changing her routine! I bet she can never stay too long in one place, in case you lunatics arrive and camp on her doorstep!’ ‘Will you be needing my business card for your return trip?’ ‘Hah!’ ‘Not even a small tip, either?’ ‘My small tip, is mirror, signal, manoeuvre as you drive away! Bye!’ – Sarah, vainly pretending not to be herself, and the taxi driver • ‘There’s this pile of broken electronic equipment in a box and I just can’t seem to let it go! It’s no earthly use, but I can’t repair it, because they don’t make the parts for it yet.’ ‘Yet?’ ‘I mean, any more.’ – Sarah and Wendy • ‘What did you hit him with?’ ‘The ashtray. I said smoking’s bad for you…’ – Wendy and Sarah • ‘I could have got help to him sooner if you weren’t so overcautious about contacting the two of us, or about telling us about your frequent house moves to avoid all these imaginary pursuers, or about changing your mobile so frequently and forbidding us to call you directly! You’re looking in your rear-view mirror all the time for something that’s not there!’ – Nat thinks Sarah is overreacting • ‘I’ve been chased by jeeps on beaches and stalked by bogus policemen, and you wonder why I’m always looking into my rear-view mirror?’ ‘Sarah, you taught me to keep it factual, so listen to your own advice. There’s no conspiracy here. You’re exaggerating things!’ ‘Nat!’ ‘Does it say “journalist” in your passport, Sarah, or is that as fake as your business card?’ – Sarah and Nat • ‘Can journalists like us have close friends, do you think? Can one get that level of trust if they know you’re an investigative journalist?’ ‘I think so, yes. I hope so.’ – Wendy and Sarah • ‘We have to save millions of lives, Nat!’ ‘I’ve heard that one before…’ – Sarah and a sceptical Nat • ‘It’ll poison huge amounts of water, it’ll poison millions, and lay waste to unimaginable areas of land!’ ‘What for?’ ‘Oh, blackmail, terror… They didn’t actually have a mission statement in their dastardly plan file!’ – Sarah and Nat • ‘The less she tells you about, and the less things she worries about, the happier I’ll be.’ ‘SJ?’ ‘Did you want something, Josh?’ ‘Are you ok?’ – Sarah uses the less/fewer thing (see The Tao Connection) to alert Josh to danger, and, bless him, he cottons on right away • ‘Time to go home.’ ‘Where’s home now, Sarah? Your new apartment’s already been trashed…’ ‘Home is where my friends are, so let’s get back, and find Natalie.’ – Sarah and Josh. Aaw The Panel Said...
