Pyramids of Mars

Story: Pyramids of Mars - Season 13, Story 82
Year: 1975
Written by: Stephen Harris
Directed by: Paddy Russell

Synopsis: Sarah and the Doctor arrive at UNIT HQ, only to find that they're several decades early, and the Egyptian god Sutekh is preparing to take over the world!

Sarah Moments:

• She makes fun of the Doctor while he’s grumpy
• She sees a creepy face appear in the TARDIS!
• She and the Doctor climb in and out of windows and sneak around the priory

• She looks after Doctor Warlock when he gets shot
• She displays quite detailed knowledge of Egyptian mythology
• She follows the Doctor to the house even though he forbids her
• The Doctor shows her what 1980 will be like if they don’t stop Sutekh
• She fights Laurence to switch on the transmitter
• She helps the Doctor deactivate the generator loop
• She throws explosives at the Doctor!

• She dresses the Doctor up as a mummy

• She shoots the explosives, but it doesn’t work
• She thinks the Doctor is dead – which is understandable because his hearts actually stop beating – but he isn’t

Capture, Rescue and Mortal Peril:

• She hides down a hole from the evil mummies

• She hides in a chest from Marcus Scarman
• She hides the Doctor when he’s unconscious
• One of the mummies tries to strangle her, but she stops them all with the Egyptian’s control ring
• The mummies capture her and render her unconscious, and the Doctor is threatened with her death if he doesn’t cooperate

• She tries to stop a mummy from killing the Doctor

• She gets trapped inside a decatron crystal tube – the Doctor frees her by solving a riddle

Quotes:

• ‘Who is your companion?’ ‘My companion? Oh, that’s just the Doctor. We travel in time, Mr Scarman – I’m really from 1980.’ ‘That is utterly preposterous, Miss Smith!’ ‘Yes. Sorry!’ - Laurence and Sarah
• ‘There’s a priest hole here somewhere – Marcus and I discovered it when we were boys! It isn’t very large, I’m afraid...’ ‘No, well, he is though, so come and give me a hand!’ - Laurence and Sarah, trying to hide the unconscious Doctor
• ‘Egyptian mummies building rockets? That’s crazy!’ - Sarah
• ‘Well, now we are here, why don’t you tune up 1980 and we can... well... leave!’ ‘I can’t.’ ‘Oh… well why can’t you?’ ‘Because if Sutekh isn’t stopped, he’ll destroy the world.’ ‘But he didn’t, did he? I mean, we know the world didn’t end in 1911!’ ‘Do we?’ ‘Yes, of course we do!’ - Sarah and the Doctor
• ‘Well?’ ‘We’ve got to go back.’ ‘Yes.’ - The Doctor and Sarah, when she sees the alternate 1980
• ‘Are you going to help, or are you just going to stand there and admire the scenery?’ ‘Your shoes need repairing. And I actually wasn’t admiring the scenery, I was waiting for you to tell me what to do!’ - The Doctor and Sarah, about to deactivate the generator loop
• ‘Just let me know if it starts to get warm.’ ‘Don’t worry – you’ll hear me breaking the sound barrier!’ - The Doctor and Sarah, deactivating the generator loop
• ‘He was so concerned about his brother.’ ‘Well I told him not to be, I told him it was too late.’ ‘Oh! Sometimes you don’t seem...’ ‘Human?’ - Sarah and the Doctor
• ‘Hurry up!’ ‘I am hurrying!’ ‘It doesn’t have to be perfect!’ - The Doctor and Sarah, as she helps him into his mummy outfit
• ‘How do I look?’ ‘It must’ve been a nasty accident!’ ‘Don’t provoke me!’ - The Doctor, wrapped in bandages, and Sarah
• ‘Tribophysics!’ ‘Yes!’ - Sarah shows off with some technobabble at the Pyramid of Mars
• ‘Don’t touch anything.’ ‘I wasn’t going...’ ‘Well, don’t!’ ‘I...’ ‘One false move and we could be blown to perdition.’ - The Doctor and Sarah
• ‘Oh, Sarah. I should never have brought you here.’ - It's a bit late for that, Doctor...

From the Target Novelisation:
Novelised by Terrance Dicks

• Sarah had been the Doctor's companion on many adventures, both before and after his change of appearance. But she realised that the Doctor had had many lives and many companions, and that she had been involved in only a small proportion of his adventures. - Sarah, unlike certain other companions, has some perspective... :P
• Sarah tugged him away from the console. 'No, Doc-tor.' - OK, so this is just a typo, but it's funny.
• Sarah looked putolcd. 'How do you fish with gelignite?' - She what?! Answers on a postcard...
• She wondered why they hadn't killed her too. Perhaps she just wasn't important enough… - Get some self-esteem, Sarah!
• Sarah stretched out a tentative hand to one of the switches, half inclined to choose by good old feminine intuition. - Probably best not...
• Sarah had a nightmare vision of trying to explain recent happenings at the Priory to some heavily-moustached village policeman of the year nineteen eleven. 'Oh no,' she said fervently, 'we don't want that.' - Evil mummies she can deal with, but moustachioed local law enforcement? Nooo!!

Wardrobe Appreciation

Sarah only has one outfit in this story, but it's a lovely one! She found it in the TARDIS wardrobe. Apparently Victoria used to wear it, but I for one have never seen it...
Looks lovely on Sarah, though...

Take a look a bit closer...

At the beginning she has a pretty hair decoration, but she loses it by the time they're out of the TARDIS

She also has what is either a small shawl or a large handkerchief, for the first few minutes of the story...

It was tricky to get a good look at the shoes, but they appear to be boot-ish, slipper-ish things with buttons up the sides:

The Panel Said...

Style Watch:

paranoidangel: I do like that white dress. It's completely impractical for an adventure but then that's the Doctor for you. 9/10
Llin: The dress is fabulous! It looks great on her. 9/10
hhertzof: The dress looks better from a distance than close up, and it's horribly impractical. 7/10
Cadi: I really like the shape of the dress. And it has sparkly bits! Yay! 8/10
Sarah_JaneSmith: I love this dress, she's adorable in it! 10/10

Sarah Watch:

paranoidangel: She is quite useful in this one. 7/10
Llin: She does loads in this one, and rescues the Doctor quite a bit. 8/10
hhertzof: Hee. Sarah as crack shot. 9/10
Sarah_JaneSmith: She's great in this, i do love a woman who can use a firearm! and she's great when she's stuck in the Smarties tube, [thats what i call it i cant remember the proper name for it] 10/10

Story Watch:
paranoidangel: I know this is supposed to be a good one but I was completely bored by it and I spent most of the time confusing the characters with each other. 3/10
Llin: The beginning is a bit slow, and later on it's a bit confusing, but it's still good fun! 6/10
hhertzof: I really liked this one. 9/10
Sarah_JaneSmith: I love this story, i saw it when i was a kid and it's one of my favourites, i dont think it's confusing at all, it's ace. 10/10
