The Ark In Space

Story: The Ark in Space – Season 12, Story 76
Year: 1975
Written by: Robert Holmes
Directed by: Rodney Bennett

Synopsis: Harry breaks the TARDIS, on what was supposed to be a trip to the moon, and he, Sarah and the Doctor end up on Space Station Nerva in the distant future, where the crew are cryogenically frozen and something malevolent is roaming the corridors...

Sarah Moments:

• She finds the secret room, but the Doctor doesn’t seem to care
• She passes out from lack of oxygen because Harry trapped her in a room with no air
• She gets transported away into a cryogenic chamber because Harry put her on the transmat couch

• She gets huffy about staying to help Harry while the Doctor has proper adventures
• She fights Vira to stop her from shooting the Doctor
• She comes up with an idea to save the day
• She saves the day by taking the vital cable through the little tunnel – she gets a bit stuck, but she manages it in the end!

• She thinks the Doctor’s dead. He isn’t.

Capture, Rescue and Mortal Peril:

• The drug that will wake her up from suspended animation could kill her! ... but it doesn’t. She wakes up fine, just a bit confused
• She and Vira rescue the Doctor from the metamorphosed Noah
• She gets grabbed by a nasty alien tendril! The Doctor pulls her free and electrocutes the thing

Quotes:

• ‘I’ve told her time and again about going off by herself! Sarah?’ - The Doctor is getting a bit frustrated with Sarah's insatiable curiosity
• ‘Steady, steady on old girl, steady on.’ ‘Harry?’ ‘Yes, I’m here, I’m here.’ ‘Call me “old girl” again and I’ll spit in your eye.’ ‘Welcome back, Sarah Jane.’ - Harry, Sarah and the Doctor, as she comes around
• ‘He talks to himself sometimes, because he’s the only one who understands what he’s talking about.’ - Sarah, on the Doctor
• ‘Well, what did Noah say?’ ‘Vamoose, or stick around and get killed.’ - Sarah summarises Noah's long speech for Harry's benefit
• ‘What was that you were trying to say, Sarah?’ ‘I was just wondering about the transport ship that Noah mentioned.’ ‘What about it?’ ‘Well, surely it has its own power system, doesn’t it?’ - Sarah had an idea all along, but nobody would listen...
• ‘How do we run a cable from the ship to the cryogenic chamber? If it’s in the open they’ll cut it.’ ‘Aren’t there conduits?’ ‘Yes, but they’re only about... this wide. We’d need a mechanical cable runner.’ ‘Why can’t I take that cable through? Well, I’m about... that wide!’ - Rogin, the Doctor and Sarah
• ‘How are you doing, old girl?’ ‘How do you think I’m doing? Twit!’ - Harry tries to encourage Sarah as she crawls through the conduit
• ‘I’m jammed! I can’t move at all, forward or back!’ ‘Oh, stop whining, girl, you’re useless!’ ‘Oh, Doctor!’ ‘Oh, Doctor? Is that all you can say for yourself? Stupid, foolish girl! We should never have relied on you, I knew you’d let us down! That’s the trouble with girls like you – you think you’re tough, but when you’re really up against it you’ve no guts at all! Hundreds of lives at stake and you lie there blubbing!’ ‘You wait till I get out! (she gets out) I can manage, I don’t need your help, thank you!’ ‘Yes you do, yes you do, yes you do.’ ‘Ow! Go away!’ ‘You’ve done marvellously, Sarah. I’m very proud of you; I really am very proud of you!’ ‘What? Oh, conned again – you’re a brute!’ ‘Me, a brute? Don’t be ungrateful, I was only encouraging you!’ - Sarah in the conduit, and the Doctor
• ‘I don’t know if it’s my imagination, but it seems to be getting stuffy in here...’ ‘It’s your imagination.’ ‘You’d say that anyway.’ - Sarah and the Doctor discuss the lack of oxygen
• ‘I don’t remember inviting you two...’ ‘Uh, no, you didn’t... but here we are!’ - The Doctor and Sarah, as they and Harry prepare to transmat down to Earth

From the Target Novelisation:
Novelised by Ian Marter

• Sarah had dived forward and she brought the Doctor down with an unorthodox but effective rugger tackle. - This sounds impressive!
• 'Will someone please listen to me?' Sarah had climbed up on to the couch and was waving her arms frantically in the air. - In this version it takes even more effort for Sarah to get some attention...
• 'Couldn't I take the cable through?' suggested Sarah. 'I don't take up much room.' 'That's no job for you, Sarah,' Harry said firmly. Sarah flushed with indignation. 'Now look here, Doctor Sullivan…' she began. - Cute!
• 'Splendid, Miss Smith,' he said. 'At last – an assignment worthy of your talents…' - Apparently crawling through tunnels is Sarah's true vocation...
• Sarah was about to risk her life in an appallingly dangerous mission. Sarah herself knew that for a journalist it was the scoop of a lifetime; but above all else in her mind was the realisation that the future of the entire human race might now depend upon her success… - So no pressure...

Wardrobe Appreciation

This episode follows immediately on from Robot, and Sarah is wearing the same dress at the beginning of this as she was at the end of that. Interestingly, though, her hair has grown several centimetres during the short trip in the TARDIS...

She has a nice hairslide, too:

Apparently you aren't allowed into the cryogenic thing wearing your own clothes, because Sarah ends up in a new costume. Very futuristic and funky.

It also comes with some kick-ass shiny boots

At the end of the episode, Sarah gets into the outfit she's about to wear for The Sontaran Experiment

The Panel Said...

Style Watch:

paranoidangel: That dress is just horrid. The futuristic outfit still looks 70s but considering it's probably supposed to be some sort of uniform, it's not bad. 6/10
Cadi: That white combo is wicked-cool! But boo to the dress appearing again :P
hhertzof: The dress did nothing for me. The jumpsuit was traditional FutureSpaceGarb (TM). Why on earth would you wear boots with a three inch heel in cryogenic sleep? 1/10 and that's just cause I like the yellow rain outfit.
Llin: I quite like the dress, and the shoes with it are lovely. The boots for the second outfit are awesome. 7/10
Sarah_JaneSmith: AGGGGGH, that bloody dress again! i love the white jumpsuit though, very 70's! and the yellow garb is adorable. 8/10

Sarah Watch:

paranoidangel: Sarah was pretty good in this one. She comes up with the idea and volunteers to crawl through tiny conduits. 9/10
hhertzof: Alternates between being asleep and being resourceful. 8/10
Llin: She's cool, very resourceful and she saves the day! 8/10
Sarah_JaneSmith: Oh she's great in this one, crawling through the conduit and getting herself stuck, lovely! 10/10

Story Watch:

paranoidangel: I like this one. I like the banter between Sarah, Harry and the Doctor and even though I knew it was bubble wrap, I was still quite scared by the monster. 10/10
hhertzof: You have to love bubblewrap monsters! The ending sold it for me. 9/10
Llin: The bubblewrap doesn't detract from the creepiness. 7/10
Sarah_JaneSmith: Great story, great monster, great Sarah 10/10

Bonus Pictures

The Doctor taught Sarah a popular dance routine from the future

Speechifying...

Aaw, how cute are they?

Nice view of the Doctor and Harry...

Poor Noah mourns the lame special effects

Aaaawwwww!!
