The Lost Boy

Watch out! This story guide contains spoilers for Parts One and Two of The Lost Boy, don't look if you don't want to know what happens!

Story: The Lost Boy, The Sarah Jane Adventures Episodes Nine and Ten

Synopsis: After Alan finds out about all of the things going on lately, he threatens to sell the house and move away with Maria, but Sarah and Maria manage to persuade him to stay. Later, a news report reveals that Luke was not created by the Bane after all, and is actually a missing boy called Ashley Stafford. He is returned to his parents, but he doesn't remember them. Meanwhile, Sarah investigates the Pharos Institute to take her mind off losing Luke, and discovers that they have learned to use telekinesis, with the aid of special headsets.
Clyde is worried about Luke and goes to see him, and becomes suspicious that his parents may not be who they claim. When he asks Mr Smith for help, Mr Smith reveals that Clyde's suspicions are correct, and that Mr Smith himself – actually an alien called a Xylok – planned it all, before zapping Clyde away!
Luke discovers that his 'parents' are really Slitheen, and the child Slitheen who they met several months ago is with them, in a different skin. While Sarah steals a telekinesis headset from the Pharos Institute for Mr Smith to study, Maria and Alan also find out that Luke's 'parents' are Slitheen, and hurry to tell Sarah.
Meanwhile, Clyde finds himself trapped inside Mr Smith, and manages to get a message to Alan's computer that Mr Smith has gone bad. Alan warns Sarah and Maria and they get away just as Mr Smith begins shooting at them.
The Slitheen take Luke to the Pharos Institute to harvest his telekinetic energy, a process that will kill him, but he escapes and goes back to Sarah's house, just as Sarah, Maria and Alan are on their way to the Pharos Institute. Sarah realises that Mr Smith is planning to use Luke's mental powers, in combination with the telekinesis headset she stole, to crash the moon into the Earth and free his kind who have been trapped underground for thousands of years.
Sarah goes to the attic, where Mr Smith's plan is already in action, and calls on K9 to protect her while she infects Mr Smith with a computer virus provided by Alan, which makes him forget his purpose to the destroy the Earth, and gives him a new one – to protect it. Luke and Clyde are freed, the Slitheen return to Raxacoricofallapatorius, and Sarah's family is together again at last.

Quotes:

• ‘This is too much to take in.' 'That's the universe, Alan. Once it's chosen to show you some of its secrets, you can't ever turn your back on it – none of us can.' - Alan and Sarah
• 'If the human race is going to survive climate change, Luke, you have to give it a hand! Not to mention my electricity bill!' - Sarah, to Luke. Ah, how sweet, he's finally becoming a normal teenager...
• 'I wish I had all the answers, Luke. I know this is difficult – you must know I do. But this isn't a bad day. Mr and Mrs Stafford are your real parents, they love you!' 'But don't you love me?' 'Of course I do! But you don't belong with me, Luke.' - Sarah and Luke
• 'You are going to be an ordinary human boy, with parents that care for you and won't ever let anything bad happen to you again – the way I never could.' - Sarah, to Luke
• 'Luke is gone. Back to his parents where he belongs. And they are his parents – Mr Smith confirmed it. The Bane kidnapped him, did things to him – I got it wrong. Not for the first time.' 'I'm really sorry.' 'No, it's for the best, I'm not cut out for being a parent. Children have no place in my life.' 'You don't mean that!' 'I told you when we met – my life is dangerous. I can't afford to have other people to worry about, they're a distraction, there can be mistakes. These past few months, I've just been lucky. I can't expect that to hold up forever.' 'What are you saying?' 'Go home. You tell your dad he was right, he should put the house on the market, and he and you and Clyde should forget all about me and everything you've seen.' 'What, how are we going to do that? What happened to never turning your back on the universe?' 'Sometimes you have to. Sometimes it's the only way to survive.' - Sarah and Maria
• 'They are using alien technology.' 'Well then, maybe I should pay them a visit?' 'My thoughts exactly.' 'Yeah, and this time, I won't have any children to slow me down!' - Mr Smith and Sarah, on the Pharos Institute
• 'I used to know someone your age who could wipe the floor with your intelligence, Nathan. And wipe the floor with you, too.' - Sarah disses an obnoxoius boy genius
• 'Intruder! Perimeter defences have been armed! Any attempt to escape may result in death! You have been warned!' 'Noted.' - Sarah laughs in the face of the Pharos Institute security
• 'We have to find Luke! I gave him to the Slitheen – whatever they want with him, I have to get him back.' - Sarah, all determined
• 'Have you got any vinegar?' 'Uh… no, no, we're all out.' 'Oh. Then we may have to stop off at a chip shop.' - Sarah and Alan, on the way to fight Slitheen
• 'Any race thinking it's better than another – that's evil, Mr Smith.' - Sarah
• 'What life do you have, alone in your attic?' 'Alone? You think I'm alone? You think I'm defenceless? Well, meet my dog! K9, protect me!' 'Affirmative, Mistress!' - Mr Smith, Sarah and K9, hooray!
• 'Is everything satisfactory, Mistress?' 'Affirmative, K9!' - Sarah is happy, awww
• 'I've seen amazing things, out there in space. But strange things can happen wherever you are.' - Sarah
• 'I have learned that life on Earth can be an adventure, too. You never know what you might find! In all the universe, I never expected to find a family.' - Sarah. Aww.

Wardrobe Appreciation

Lots of outfits today, although it's mostly stuff we've seen before! Firstly, a nice white top for stargazing:

Then it's back to the lovely waistcoat ensemble from Eye of the Gorgon...

The jacket from Warriors of Kudlak makes a welcome return:

Later on, Sarah moves on to a pretty green top, and the jacket shows up again too. Where's the purple one, I'd like to know? Hmm?

Sarah has no fewer than three outfits for an actually pretty brief flashback - two different cardigans from Invasion of the Bane, the jeans and boots from all series, and a top which seems to be blue or green, although it's hard to tell:

The Panel Said...

Style Watch:

paranoidangel: She manages to wear a selection of outfits that are quite nice. Which is a bit unusual for Sarah! 9/10
Sarah_JaneSmith: Nothing really stood out to me with her outfits in this episode, but they were still all nice 9/10
Llin: Oh, it was fine, but a bit samey... 8/10

Sarah Watch:

paranoidangel: I just loved that she gave Luke up because it was the right thing to do. Anything else she did after that was just the chocolate on the cake (I don't like icing). 10/10
Sarah_JaneSmith: OMG it was so heartbreaking when she mouthed "i love you" to Luke, i nearly cried, she was cool in the rest of it too especialy running from the motorbike 10/10
Llin: Amazing, start to finish. But oh! - so sad! 10/10

Story Watch:

paranoidangel: I liked that they all (including Alan) had something to do in this. And that actions from earlier in the series had consequences and it wasn't just random aliens invading, as they do every week. 9/10
Sarah_JaneSmith: bloody slitheen, i hate them, but they were ok in this story now they've gotten rid of the stupid farting thing, everyone was awesome in this especially Alan, hes cool! and oh K9!!!! i love him, nore K9 please! 10/10
Llin: My heart was in my mouth most of the way through. Brilliant! 10/10
