The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith

Story: The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith - Sarah Jane Adventures Series Two, Episodes Nine and Ten
Year: 2008
Written by: Gareth Roberts
Directed by: Graeme Harper

Synopsis: When Sarah is given the chance to travel back in time and see her parents, she can't resist. But is it a trap? Of course it is...

Sarah Moments:

• She returns a lost little boy from the past home through a time fissure, and discovers that it leads to a place and time shortly before her parents died. Sensibly, though, she leaves straight away.
• She is so rubbish at hiding her feelings that the kids, and even Mr Smith, realise straight away that something is up.
• She sneaks off to the time fissure to see her parents, but Luke catches her and comes too
• She meets her parents at the Foxgrove Village Fete, and claims her name is Victoria Beckham...

• She disables her parents' car to stop them going on the drive where they will be killed
• Sarah and Luke go back through the time fissure to a horrible alternate future, where the Trickster is waiting!

• She and Luke return to 1951 to try and stop the Trickster before he manifests himself there and changes the future
• Sarah refuses to send her parents to their deaths, even if it will save the world
• She thinks the TARDIS has arrived, but it's just a regular police box! Oh no!
• Sarah and Luke recruit Barbara to help them look for anything out of place in the village
• She tries to use the sonic lipstick to stop the Trickster, but it doesn't help
• She gets to have a real, proper family hug with her parents before they bravely drive off to their doom!

• Sarah closes the time fissure forever

Capture, Rescue and Mortal Peril:

• Sarah's rescuing of her parents leaves Clyde and Rani stranded in an alternate timeline!

Quotes:

• 'But you've travelled through time in the TARDIS!' 'With the Doctor, who knew what he was doing… most of the time.' - Rani and Sarah
• 'We lived in a village called Foxgrove – that's where I was born. One afternoon, in August 1951, they got in their car, drove off, and they never came back.' 'There was an accident?' 'A tractor had broken down in the lane. They went straight into it.' 'You got out ok.' 'I wasn't with them. They left me behind – in my pram, at the side of the road, alone.' 'They must have had a reason.' 'To leave a three-month-old baby on its own?' 'So, your Aunt Lavinia brought you up.' 'Dad's sister, the family genius. She did the best she could, but she was always so busy, never in one place long enough to lick a stamp. She always said my mum and dad were the best parents in the world. But I couldn't help thinking – was she covering up for them? Because that day they just upped and left their baby alone. Left me behind.' - Sarah and Luke. Did you spot the Planet of the Spiders and K9 & Company references?
• 'Where'd you get those clothes?' 'Back of my wardrobe! Simple, classic – it'll do the job!' 'You used to wear that? Seriously?' 'Listen, kid, the fifties came back in the seventies – I remember when this was quite the thing!' - Unlike some of us, Luke doesn't properly appreciate Sarah's wardrobe...
• 'If it is a trap, this is the only way to find out who's behind it. That sounds like a good rational reason I can give myself, anyway.' - Sarah, heading into the time fissure
• 'We'll make a list of all her enemies…' 'Great idea! Shouldn't take us more than fifteen years!' - Clyde and Rani, trying to work out where Sarah's gone
• 'You going to have more kids?' 'Couple more – that's always been the plan! Don't want her growing up on her own, nobody to play with.' - Sarah and Barbara
• 'Eddie thinks she's going to turn out like his sister – the brain of Britain!' 'I'm sure she'll turn out fine.' 'You wonder sometimes, though, don't you Victoria? What kind of world's she going to grow up in? Russians and the Yanks letting off H-bombs left, right and centre. All these men with big ideas on how to live your life…' 'I think the future will be better than that.' 'Well, that's why we moved out here. You see, our generation, we had all the upheaval, the danger, but Sarah Jane's going to have a better life!' 'She's the best little girl in the world! We'll always be there for you, won't we, darling?' 'I'd better go! It was nice meeting you… no… it was incredible. Goodbye!' - Barbara, Sarah and Eddie
• 'I'll never know why they left me that day, but I do know that they loved me.' - Sarah, on her parents
• 'Why? Why them, it's so unfair!' 'You know you can't do it.' 'Luke, I have saved the lives of so many people, people I didn't even know, I don't know – miners on Peladon, all the people drinking BubbleShock, without a second thought, but this is my mum and dad!' 'You know you're not meant to!' 'Why? Why can't I? Why shouldn't I save them too?' 'What about the way you were brought up? If you changed it, then what if you never meet the Doctor? What if you never meet me?' 'I only want to look through the fissure, see what my life becomes if they survive. If there's anything wrong, we come back and set it right again!' 'Unless this is the trap.' 'Why do we have to think this is something terrible? What if this is a good thing? All these years I've been putting other people first – there has to be something at the end of it, doesn't there? Something for me? What if this is it? My reward!' - Sarah and Luke. And if you don't cry, you have a heart of stone.
• 'There's only one person in the universe who would know, straight away, one person who could help us… and where is he whenever you need him?' - Sarah, on the Doctor
• 'Listen! I'm helping you, and you've not listened to me, you've not answered any of my questions!' 'Sorry, I really am sorry, but we can't – I wish I could.' 'You think I'm stupid, but I'm not! That thing, the way you talk, energy reaction… are you from somewhere else?' 'No… and I don't think you're stupid, Barbara, I think you're amazing, and a brilliant mother, and more than I ever hoped you'd be – but I can't say anything more.' - Barbara and Sarah
• 'I'm looking for a woman – short, brown hair, very pretty, probably with her son… he's a bit weird.' - Rani's short and sweet description of the Smiths
• 'One thing, though… it's important. Sarah Jane, our baby. Is she safe, does she have a good life?' 'Yes! So many incredible things, things you wouldn't believe… Don't go!' 'We've got to, though, haven't we?' 'Like he worked any of it out! I said, didn't I? I don't understand it, but sometimes the heart knows things the mind can't explain.' 'Oh Mum… Dad…' 'Come here…' 'Look at you! Older than us!' 'And you came all that way to see us!' 'I thought you'd left me behind! I never knew you, I never had the chance, it was so unfair!' 'Who said life was fair, eh?' - Eddie, Sarah and Barbara
• 'I did nothing! That was my mum and dad, saving the world! Something we Smiths can't help doing!' - Sarah
• 'I'll be off home, then! Huh… today I've been to an alternative timeline, and now I'm saying "I'll be off home, then…"' 'That's the life we lead. Sometimes it brings you such joy, and sometimes it brings you the worst things in the world.' - Clyde and Sarah
• 'They were my mum and dad, and they were wonderful!' - Sarah
