The Time Warrior ![]() Story: The Time Warrior - Season 11, Story 70 Year: 1973/74 Written by: Robert Holmes Directed by: Alan Bromly Synopsis: Hundreds of years ago, a star falls in the forest, and turns out to be the space craft of a Sontaran, Linx, who claims Earth for himself and allies himself with Irongron, a local robber baron. Back in the present day, UNIT are investigating the disappearances of several noted scientists, and have decided to keep a lot of other scientists together in the same building to keep an eye on them. The Doctor is present, as is Sarah Jane Smith, a journalist posing as her scientist aunt. When the Doctor realises that the scientists are being transported to the past by Linx, to help repair his ship, he follows in the TARDIS, not knowing that Sarah is stowing away. Sarah is captured by Irongron's men, but escapes to a neighbouring castle, and believing the Doctor to be in league with Irongron and Linx, she leads a raid to capture him. With the Doctor finally present, he explains that he is trying to stop Linx too, and they come up with a plan to defeat him. Sarah helps to send the lost scientists back home, and Linx is killed just as he is about to depart in his ship. The ship explodes, destroying the castle. Everyone escapes, and Sarah and the Doctor return to the present day. Sarah Moments: • The moment where she first enters the room, and the Doctor's life, is enough to make the heart of this Sarah fan skip a beat. ![]() • And then there’s banter with the Doctor, and you can tell she doesn’t quite trust him yet. • She sneaks into the TARDIS, and then sneaks out again. ![]() ![]() • She gives the bad guys a good talking too. It doesn’t work, but still, she does. • Within hours of arriving at the castle of Edward of Wessex, she’s practically running the place. ![]() • She really gets stuck in to the battle with Irongron’s men. Capture, Rescue and Mortal Peril: • Almost immediately after emerging from the TARDIS, she is grabbed by one of Irongron’s men. But she puts up a pretty good fight, kicking and yelling and threatening to go to the police. • She gets hypnotised, by the Sontaran. She’d better get used to it… ![]() • In all the confusion with the robot knight, she manages not only to escape, but also to rescue Hal, Edward of Wessex’s archer. • She comes up with the plan to raid Irongron’s castle to get the Doctor – but it’s a capture, not a rescue! The poor Doctor looks quite shocked! • After the misunderstanding with the Doctor is all sorted out, she helps to send the captured scientists back to the 20th Century. • She saves the Doctor from being killed by Irongron’s men, and later by the Sontaran. See how indispensable she is already? ![]() Quotes: • ‘I’m a journalist. Sarah Jane Smith.’ – Sarah introduces herself to the Doctor. • ‘Are you going to give me away, Doctor?’ ‘I don’t think so.’ ‘Why not?’ – Sarah, gleefully, when the Doctor reveals that he knows her secret. • ‘Why do you want to be woken up when it detects delta particles?’ ‘Because I am very fond of delta particles.’ – Sarah, being nosy about the Doctor’s equipment. • ‘Why do you ask so many questions?’ ‘Because I’m a journalist.’ – The Doctor and Sarah. • ‘Still only a police box…’ – Sarah, after an unexpected trip in the TARDIS. • ‘Ah, she spits fire, eh, Bloodaxe? Come here, girl.’ ‘Get lost!’ – Irongron and Sarah. • ‘Aye, the wench is crazed right enough… a pity – she is not uncomely…’ – Irongron, on Sarah. • ‘He’s no magician, just some eccentric scientist.’ – Sarah, being rather dismissive of the Doctor. • ‘There’s always something you can do – it’s just a matter of working out what!’ – Sarah, to Edward of Wessex. • ‘She has the heart of a lion, sire – I saw her give Irongron the sharp edge of her tongue!’ ‘If I had an army of girls such as you, I might hold this castle forever!’ – Hal and Edward, on Sarah. • ‘You knock out the sentries, rush into the castle, grab the Doctor, and away!’ – Sarah got her ideas about rescue plans from books. • ‘Thank you very much, Miss Smith, a most timely rescue!’ ‘This isn’t a rescue Doctor, it’s a capture. Let’s get him out of here.’ – The Doctor and Sarah. • ‘You’ve been getting around, Sarah…’ – Oh really, Doctor? • ‘Typically masculine arrangement, though – we do all the dirty work, you get all the fun.’ – Sarah, teasing the Doctor. • ‘Ooh, I could murder a cup of tea…’ – Sarah, after learning about the Time Lords. • ‘I’m not afraid of men! They don’t own the world.’ – Sarah, to a serving wench. • ‘Look at that great spider!’ – Sarah, creating a distraction. Wardrobe Appreciation And now to the most important bit - the outfits. Sarah wears - count them! - four outfits in this episode, and she looks an absolute dream in every one. The first one is this lovely ensemble: Check out how wide those trousers are! Aren't they fantastic? And the jacket fits so beautifully. Now, let's look a bit more closely. Here's the top half with the jacket on, and also you can see that she's wearing a gold necklace. The jacket is really quite nice. Let's look at those pretty buttons... On the sleeve there, and on the front of the jacket. Incidentally, would you get a load of that collar? It's mahusive! Anyway, after a bit she takes the jacket off, and underneath, as you can see, there's a fabulous tank top, and then a shirt under that. Here they are from the front and the back. Isn't that a lovely colour? And isn't her hair nice? Now, the bit that gave me a bit of trouble with this outfit was the shoes. From this picture we at least get a slight idea of the colour and style, but there were no close-ups to be had! Now, the second outfit is a bit of a Robin Hood type thingy, consisting of black leggings and a green top made of some quite rough material. The top laces up at the collar: You can see here that she has a little belt with a pocket on it: Again, tricky to get a good shot of the shoes, but it looks as though they're just soft, black shoes. The next outfit is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it one - Sarah and the Doctor dress as monks to infiltrate Irongron's castle. Mmm, monktastic. Now, let's take a look at her fourth and final outfit of the story. She's supposed to be a serving wench, but because she's Sarah her dress is prettier than everyone else's. See, she gets a little veil thingy: Ooh, and nice buttons up the sleeves, too... So that was the outfits! The Panel Said... Style Watch: paranoidangel: Ok, so her first outfit is a bit 70s, but since it was the 70s at the time, I can't really complain. But those flares! And the collar! The Robin Hood get-up is quite nice. She looks good in all of them, so 9/10 Cadi: Ooh, I really like the suit/tank top/shirt ensemble. She looks very class! And the pretty dress at the end is very cool. Especially the veil and the buttons! hhertzof: Very 70's suit. Very renfair medieval outfits. I liked them anyway 8/10 Llin: She looks fab throughout. I love tank tops. 10/10 Sarah_JaneSmith: : I love that brown suit, it fits beautifully one her and looks ace! but then i am a sucker for 70's clothes. The green robin hood outfit is so cute i just want to eat her up, Monk Sarah's Cute too and The dress is awesome. 10/10 Sarah Watch: paranoidangel: She's not that phased by the TARDIS, she captures the Doctor, comes up with the plans and tries to introduce Womens Lib to the Dark Ages. I think it was all downhill from here on, so 10/10 hhertzof: Smart and resourceful. Sarah at her best. 10/10 Llin: She doesn't even care that she's in the distant past, she just gets on with it! 10/10 Sarah_JaneSmith: copes amazingly well with being flung back through time, and her first meeting with the doctor is great, oooh she doesnt like him! 10/10 Story Watch: paranoidangel: I quite like this one, there's plenty going on and an interesting mystery. 8/10 hhertzof: I wince at faux medieval, but the scientists in the basement made up for it. 8/10 Llin: Plenty going on, the Doctor is cool in this one too. 9/10 Sarah_JaneSmith: This story is in my top five favourite episodes, i never get bored watching this one, there's so much going on. 10/10 Bonus Pictures ![]() Sarah gets up-close and personal with a wall... ![]() And the award for Campest Sontaran Ever...
